Advancing the Field with Research-Driven Innovation

The Care Method is a groundbreaking series of research-driven curricula designed to transform the way we treat domestic violence and forensic populations. Rooted in the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) model, Person-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), this series offers a modern, evidence-based approach to achieving lasting behavioral change.

The first volumes of The Care Method were published in October 2024 and March 2025, marking the culmination of years of clinical experience, research, and a commitment to advancing ethical and effective treatment practices.

Today, The Care Method is:
  • Fully implemented in multiple agencies across the state of Colorado and New Jersey, with additional states currently in the process of evaluation and adoption
  • Preparing for formal research evaluation, with an IRB application submitted to California State University, Sacramento, to launch an empirical study on treatment outcomes and reduction of recidivism
  • Rapidly expanding, attracting national interest from agencies, treatment providers, and judicial systems seeking a higher standard of care for court-mandated clients

Women arrested for domestic violence often enter treatment carrying complex histories—shaped by trauma, survival strategies, societal stigma, and the legal system’s gendered biases. Unlike traditional approaches designed primarily for male offenders, The CARE Method provides a specialized, evidence-based framework for counseling tailored to the unique pathways that lead women to use violence.

Inside, counselors will find:

  • A trauma-informed framework – Strategies for addressing the intersection of past victimization and present violence without excusing harmful behaviors.

  • Client-centered counseling methods – A step-by-step guide for fostering engagement, reducing resistance, and supporting accountability through motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and structured intervention plans.

  • Neuroscience and emotional regulation techniques – Tools to help clients manage stress, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation.

Testimonial from a client

“The time I spent under the CARE method was a learning experience I never knew that I needed. The insight that was given to me was more than just doing assignments and having discussions with the group. It was life changing. The way the curriculum was structured was very comprehensive and full of information that left me with new perspectives about myself, my life and the way I handled various triggers and issues. I was unable to identify many of the things that contributed to my unhealthy behaviors and cycles. I also wasn't aware of how those things actually affected not only myself but others around me. Through this curriculum I not only gained valuable insight, but a greater understanding of why I behaved, felt and reacted to the things I hadn't been able to put a name to.
